Breathing Made Easier

WHAT IS A SPACER?

A spacer is a hand-held device used to make it easier for people with respiratory illnesses (such as Asthma & COPD) to inhale their medicine and to achieve a more effective result.

It is typically a container with a mouthpiece at one end and a hole for the inhaler at the other.
Spacers can only be used with "puffer" style inhalers (a pMDI, or pressurised metered-dose inhaler).

The medicine is ‘fired’ from the puffer into the spacer and is then inhaled.

Using a spacer helps increase the amount of the medicine that reaches the small airways in the lungs, compared with using a puffer on its own.
